US Appeals Court ruling that every USA citizen needs to be mad about

Today the New York Times reported that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the rider added in by Senators Jon Tester and Mike Simpson into the 2012 Federal Budget is legal and that the US Congress had the right to remove protections from the grey wolf from the Endangered Species Act. Why does everyone need to be mad about this? Let’s take a look back. Continue reading

Help End Animal Testing by Supporting Stem Cell Research

Animal testing has gone on for centuries and has yielded many huge advances in science and medicine which has made us a healthier species. Animal testing was used for the development of penicillin, insulin, and blood transfusions, as well as treatments for tuberculosis (TB), asthma, meningitis, organ transplants, breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and many other critical medical advancements. Not only that, animals were tested for space flight. Many pet food companies also test their products on animals. It’s clear that it is almost impossible to live a day without coming across a result of animal testing that has made our lives easier and healthier.

But, we firmly believe that this time has passed. Animal testing is no longer needed and while other alternatives are considered highly controversial, new developments in medical science has even made those controversies less controversial.

Our Struggle Ahead

Environmentalists have always had a hard and stressful fight.  While we know we’re doing the right thing politics are run by money and corporations who typically care more about their bottom line than doing what is right for the environment.  Personally I think it is sad that very short sighted goals of profits win over protecting the only home we have right now.

Recently strong evidence was shown about the lack of respect that some members of our government have for the environmental and the people trying to protect it. Dr. Douglas Brinkley went head to head (in a verbal sense) against Representative Don Young (who referred to Dr. Brinkley as “Dr. Rice” at one point). Luckily, Dr. Brinkley stood his ground during the oral confrontation.

Later in the video Dr. Brinkley reiterates what Rep. Young said earlier about his congressional district. Allegedly Rep. Young referred to his district as “boring, it’s not exciting, there’s nothing there”. I have to agree with Dr. Brinkley on this one – a congressional leader should love the land he represents. If this is true this shows a lack of compassion Rep. Young has for his district and if you lack compassion, how can you improve it?

Edit:

C-Span also released the continuation where Dr. Brinkley attempted to “correct the record” and you can see the results:
